A Story of Enduring Commitment
In 1963, while working for a pension consulting firm, Connie Siegel discovered that
some potential clients were reluctant to use the firm because it was owned by an
insurance company. He saw in this the need for independent, unbiased actuarial advice.
Connie decided to fill the need by founding his own company,
Conrad Siegel Actuaries.
Connie's judgment proved correct. Clients were anxious for impartial advice. Referrals
came in from lawyers, accountants, bankers, financial consultants and others. Pensions
became the core of our company's business. Some of the clients with whom we began
in 1963 are still with us today.
Reputation
Our reputation grew quickly. The mayor of Harrisburg retained us on an ongoing basis
to provide actuarial advice on pensions. Robert P. Casey, then Pennsylvania auditor
general, hired us to examine teacher and state employee pension systems. We went
on to work not only with numerous other state and federal agencies, but also hundreds
of corporate employers and municipalities.
The regulation of pension plans has become increasingly more detailed and complex
with the enactment of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA),
the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Many employers
have moved from defined benefit plans to defined contribution plans so we began
offering voice response capabilities and Internet access for our daily valuation
clients. Then in 2002, we established Conrad Siegel
Investment Advisors, Inc. to offer to our clients
an investment strategy based on a long-term actuarial basis.
In the early 1990's, health care costs began to climb and compete for benefit dollars.
As this trend occurred, our practice expanded to include benefits of all kinds including
health care. In 2006, we introduced a new automated benefit administration system
in response to our clients' requests. We continue to expand our capabilities based
on the needs of employers in our region.
Today
Today, our company consists of more than 95 professionals, including 23 actuaries,
with widely diversified skills. We have moved into a new facility, occupying 25,000
square feet of space at 501 Corporate Circle, which is our fourth and largest office
location to date. In terms of actuaries on staff, we are one of the 20 largest actuarial
firms in the country.
We have grown, changed and achieved many successes, yet we retain as strongly as
ever our original commitment to the welfare of our clients. We are proud to play
a major role in the design, implementation, and administration of hundreds of retirement
and health and welfare plans and to provide our clients with independent, unbiased
advice and consulting in the ever-more-complex field of actuarial and employee benefit
services.
